During the COVID-19 pandemic, Maaike realized that she had mainly been playing with musicians abroad and not with local musicians from Amsterdam, where she lives. She missed playing music with people and was simultaneously curious to discover the creative female artists living in the same city. Inspired by the Women’s Choir at the PEOPLE festival in Berlin, she decided to start a collective of female singer-composers focusing primarily on vocal music, but who could also contribute an instrument to the band.
Vox Sturnus was born: a vibrant new Dutch-Scandinavian vocal collective of six talented women who compose their own unique music in no fewer than five languages (Dutch, English, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian) and weave their voices into a sublime, harmonious whole. The group has just finished recording their EP Travelling Light, which will be released in January 2025.
